How To Care For Your Merino Socks
There are many benefits to merino wool socks. One of the misconception though is that merino wool socks are difficult to care for. In this article, we will be offering care instructions on how to clean, wash and dry them. Simple tips below will save you a lot of trouble and ensure you will enjoy your merino wool socks for a long time.
We might start by saying that merino wool is a great natural fibre. Clothes containing merino wool generally smell less and do not need washing as often as other materials. This is because all bacteria is absorbed by wool fibres and they keep it from growing and reproducing. Airing out between wears may sometimes be enough and your merino socks will not need as much washing as your cotton socks, for example.
By following these few simple steps, you will get most wear out of your merino socks.
1. Turn the socks inside out before washing.
2. Make sure there are no clothes with zippers (if so, ensure all zippers are closed) in the washing machine. It is also recommended not to wash merino garments together with coarse fabrics, such as denim, too often as these could remove loose wool fibres (which is also known as 'pilling').
3. Machine wash the socks using gentle cycle ('delicates' or 'wool' cycle) in lukewarm water, approximately 30°C, or cold water. Cold water is more gentle on garments in general. Hot water, on the other hand, will shrink the wool.
4. Use mild detergent and DO NOT USE fabric softener. This is very important as fabric softener will create a coat on the wool fibres and consequently destroy their unique abilities.
In addition, be careful to avoid using a detergent that contains enzymes. Wool is a protein fibre and protease enzymes may attack the wool fibres and damage them.
5. Air-dry them (if air-drying outside, put them in the shade so they are not in contact with direct sunlight). Most wool products, including our socks, cannot be tumble-dryed.
